Catch 22 and a half

Aren't computers amazing? Don't they represent a pinnacle of human technological achievement, the product, surely, of some of the greatest intellects of our time?
Doh! Not when it comes to error messages!!
I mean, who makes these things up?
Especially this one (above) which happened to my PC recently.
The only question is- should I press F1 or F2?
What do you think? :-)

what did you do then?

Yes, did you press F1 or F2?

Hey, I wanted everyone to tell ME what they would do first. THEN I'll say what I did. :-)

I would press F7 just to see what would happen. Or turn the computer off!

Thank you for your suggestion, Lindsay. I knew that pressing any of the function keys was a total waste of time since the pc, for some reason, could not detect its presence - but, I pressed them ALL anyway. Then I did what any sensible person would do and re-started the pc, only to find it returning the same error message. In the end I had to move the pc lead to a different USB socket and restart. Still not sure what caused the problem tho as all USB sockets are working fine.

Sometimes my (6-year old) laptop starts to boot up and says 'Operating System Not Found' in the middle of a black screen. I re-boot and it magically finds it. I think it thinks it's funny.
Hope you solved your keyboard problem!
(I lost track of your blog for a while - my computer also thought it would be funny to delete all my bookmarks. But I found it again!)

Hi Emma, good to have you back again. Be careful about that message. It may mean that your hard disk is about to fail. That's exactly what happened to mine and I discovered that my automatic backups were non-existent. I've lost about 18months worth of data, including contact details. I'm also concerned there may be some virus around as this is the third time in as many weeks that I have heard about that error message appearing. not that I want to alarm you of course... :-)

What to do?

Buy a Mac.

Hi Cherie. I have a Mac also, and while I like many things about it, it is by no means perfect either. Yes - I can even get Macs to crash!

Iain, I know, some files have been corrupted. Fortunately I backed up most things earlier onto a thumb drive (although I haven't checked them all). Hope your computer's doing better now.

I know I don't blog much but the truth is I have another blog that is non-work-related. So I thought I'd give you that address too, although I'm hiding this comment on an old post because I don't advertise my non-work blog where my work-blog-only readers might see it! All sounds very clandestine, but it's just so I can be a bit freer on the other one.
